The most conservation-led roofscape in the north

Inside the city walls almost every building is listed, sits in a conservation area, or both. We are based on Queenswood Grove in Acomb, so the whole city is local work for us.

"Elliott and his team are great roofers. Work was done to a very high standard but also done in a very timely manner. We've had many people see his work and ask who the company was."

"Got 3 quotes in total — EJL were by far the most competitive and had been recommended by someone I trusted. Communication was excellent throughout and the finish on the roof is faultless."

York roofing questions

How long does it take you to get to central York from Acomb?
Around 10 to 15 minutes driving from Queenswood Grove to most of central York. Inside the walls is a different access conversation: we usually park outside, walk in with hand tools, and arrange a separate small delivery for materials. The two-hour callback applies, Monday to Saturday daytime.
My house is inside the York city walls. What is involved?
Almost certainly listed, almost certainly in a conservation area, and often both. Roof material changes usually need conservation officer involvement and often listed building consent. Access for scaffold and materials is the practical challenge, as many central streets are pedestrian-only or have load restrictions, so we plan that side of the job before we quote.
Do you work in Bootham, the Mount, Bishophill and Holgate?
Yes. Each is a designated conservation area with a high density of listed buildings, and all sit within an easy drive of our Acomb base. We carry sand-cast lead and hydraulic lime mortar for this kind of work and quote to the conservation specification where one applies.
What does it cost to reroof a listed Georgian terrace in central York?
More than a standard reroof. Materials are typically reclaimed Welsh slate or original-matched clay pantile, usually £320 to £450 per square metre installed, with sand-cast lead at chimneys and valleys and hydraulic lime mortar throughout. A small Georgian terrace of around 85 square metres tends to land between £25,000 and £40,000 depending on specification and listing requirements. Every job starts with a free survey and a fixed written quote within 24 hours.
Do you handle listed building consent applications?
Yes. We put the application together with the heritage statement, photographs, drawings and material specification, and liaise with the City of York Council conservation team. Statutory determination is eight weeks, and straightforward like-for-like applications often come back quicker.
Can you do period property work outside the city walls too?
Yes. The Victorian and Edwardian belt outside the walls, along Bishopthorpe Road, Heslington Road, the Mount, Holgate Road and Clifton, is full of period properties with the same craft roofing needs. We cover all of them from Acomb.
