Our story
Started by Elliott Langan in 2010, still family-run
EJL began as a one-man operation working out of a van in Acomb. Elliott had spent years roofing for other York firms and kept meeting homeowners who had been sold the wrong fix, the wrong materials or the wrong price. The premise of EJL was simple: the roofer who looks at your roof should be the roofer who prices it, does the work and guarantees it.
Fifteen years on, that is still the whole model. We are family-run and deliberately small. We can run two crews well and we cannot run six, so we would rather turn work away than pass your roof to a subcontractor we do not know. No call centre, no franchise, and no badge claimed before it is confirmed.

How we work

Residential only
No factories, no schools, no supermarket flat roofs. Every decision is tuned for someone whose home is involved.
No subcontractors
Every slate, lead apron and chimney pot is fitted by Elliott or someone on the in-house team. No exceptions.
Conservation done properly
Sand-cast lead, lime mortar and listed building paperwork are core skills here, not occasional extras.
The phone gets answered
Callbacks within two hours, Monday to Saturday daytime. We are honest that we are not a 24/7 call centre.

Who runs EJL Roofing?
EJL Roofing Residential Ltd is run by Elliott Langan, who started the business in 2010 and still leads every job. The company is registered at Companies House under number 15305633 and works from Acomb, York, with one small in-house team.
Why is "Residential" in the company name?
It is a deliberate scope decision. We do not chase school re-roofs or supermarket flat-roof contracts. EJL works on homes, so the materials, the finish standards and the way we deal with you are all tuned to someone whose house is involved.
Do you use subcontractors?
No. Every tile, slate and lead detail is fitted by Elliott or by someone on the in-house team. No subbies, no franchise, no call centre. If we are too busy to do a job properly, we say so rather than pass your roof to a crew we do not know.
Are you insured?
Yes. Public liability cover is £2 million, plus employer's liability for the team. The certificate is available on request before the survey, not just before the deposit.
Why the leadwork and conservation specialism?

Where exactly are you based?
