"Elliott and his team are great roofers. Work was done to a very high standard but also done in a very timely manner. We've had many people see his work and ask who the company was."

The Archbishop's village, three roof eras in one place
Bishopthorpe sits three miles south of our Acomb base, on the western bank of the River Ouse. The Archbishop of York has lived at Bishopthorpe Palace for over 800 years, and the village grew up around the Palace boundary, with the Bishopthorpe Conservation Area covering Main Street, Acaster Lane, Chantry Lane and the riverside frontages.
The roofs are layered by era. The oldest cottages around the Palace and on Main Street carry Welsh slate and clay pantile, with the odd stone slate. The Victorian and Edwardian villas on Vicarage Lane, Appleton Road and Sykes Lane are mostly Welsh slate with lead dressed bay tops and tall original chimneys. The post-war and modern estates off Sim Balk Lane and Maple Avenue are concrete tile or interlocking pantile on standard residential cycles.
The village is administered by City of York Council, the same authority as Acomb and the rest of the city, so the planning and conservation rules are ones we know well. Material swaps inside the conservation area usually need approval, and near the Palace the officer will often weigh what a roof looks like from the Palace gardens and the river, not just the street.
The river matters too. Homes nearest the Ouse, at the foot of Acaster Lane and along Chantry Lane, see more moisture and more moss on north facing slopes, which we allow for when we survey older slate.
