Roofing in Selby

An Abbey town with three kinds of roof

Selby sits about 13 miles south of our Acomb base, a 25 to 30 minute run down the A19. Around the Grade I Norman Abbey is a Georgian commercial core on Gowthorpe, Finkle Street and Park Street, a Victorian villa belt around The Crescent and Brook Street, and post-war and modern estates out toward Flaxley Road and Brayton.

The roofs follow the same pattern. Welsh slate and clay pantile in the conservation area around the Abbey, where changes to roof materials usually need approval from North Yorkshire Council. Slate with leaded bay tops and tall chimneys in the villa belt. Concrete tile and interlocking pantile on the estates. Selby's flood history also means rainwater goods on the lower streets deserve more thought than usual, and we spec them accordingly.

"Elliott and his team are great roofers. Work was done to a very high standard but also done in a very timely manner. We've had many people see his work and ask who the company was."

"Got 3 quotes in total — EJL were by far the most competitive and had been recommended by someone I trusted. Communication was excellent throughout and the finish on the roof is faultless."

Selby roofing questions

How long does it take you to get to Selby?
About 25 to 30 minutes from our base on Queenswood Grove in Acomb, straight down the A19. We can usually be out the same week for a free survey, and the two-hour callback applies Monday to Saturday daytime.
My Selby house is in the conservation area. Does that affect roofing?
The Selby Conservation Area covers the Abbey precinct and the Georgian commercial core, including Gowthorpe, Park Street, Finkle Street, Micklegate and Ousegate. It has been administered by North Yorkshire Council since April 2023. Inside the area, changes to roof materials typically need conservation officer approval, and a good number of Gowthorpe and Park Street frontages are individually listed. We talk you through what that means for your roof before any work is priced.
Do you work on Selby Abbey?
No. Selby Abbey is Grade I listed and one of the most important Norman churches in England, and its roof is specialist ecclesiastical work handled through the Church of England and its appointed contractors. We cover the homes in the streets around the Abbey, where anything visible from the Abbey approach can form part of the conservation officer's assessment.
What kind of roofs do Selby houses have?
A classic Yorkshire abbey-town mix. The Georgian core around Gowthorpe, Finkle Street and Park Street is mostly Welsh slate with some clay pantile. The Victorian and Edwardian villas around The Crescent, Brook Street and Brayton Lane are slate, often with leaded bay tops and tall chimneys. The post-war and modern estates toward Flaxley Road and the bypass are concrete tile and interlocking pantile.
Who handles conservation and listed building consent in Selby?
North Yorkshire Council. Selby and Tadcaster were both part of the old Selby District before the unitary authority took over in April 2023, so conservation matters for both towns now go through the same North Yorkshire planning team. We price conservation work with the consent process in mind and tell you honestly what approval is likely to involve.
Do you cover the villages around Selby?
Yes. Brayton, Riccall, Cawood, Wistow, Camblesforth, Carlton, Hambleton, Thorpe Willoughby and Burn are all within easy reach of the A19, usually 25 to 40 minutes from our Acomb base. The same free survey and fixed written quote applies.
