Why use a roofer for solar instead of a solar-only installer?
Most solar PV system failures we're called to fix are roof failures, not solar failures. Lead flashings done wrong at the panel-to-tile interface. Mounting brackets fixed into rafters in the wrong place. Roof tiles cracked or slipped during installation. We're roofers first, solar second. The PV system goes on a roof we understand.
In-roof or on-roof, which is right for my house?
On-roof (panels mounted above the existing tiles or slates) is the most common, cheaper, faster to install, suitable for any existing roof. In-roof (panels integrated into the roof covering, replacing tiles in the panel area) is more expensive but cleaner aesthetically and the recommended option on listed and conservation-area properties where surface mounting isn't appropriate.
Do you need planning permission for solar panels?
For most domestic properties, no. Solar PV is permitted development. For listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 directions in York, planning permission or listed building consent may be required. We check at the survey and handle any application needed.
