A regular northern run

Strensall and Towthorpe roofs

A village with an old heart, a lot of later housing, and weather that tests a roof more than the city does.

Strensall is a village of two halves. The older core around the green and St Mary's is traditional, with pitched tile and some Yorkshire stock, while most of the rest is twentieth-century estate housing in concrete interlocking tile, including the streets that grew around the old army camp and run out towards Towthorpe. Out by Strensall Common the houses sit more exposed than a sheltered city street, and that wind and driving rain tends to find the tired ridge, the loose verge and the worn flashing before anything else.

From Acomb it is about six miles north-east, roughly twenty minutes, so Strensall is a regular run rather than a special trip. A leak can usually be seen within a day or two and a free survey is booked within the working week. On the more exposed roofs we often suggest mechanically fixed dry-ridge and dry-verge systems, which hold far better in the wind than the old bedded mortar they replace.

Meg L
Roof repair, York

Elliott and his team are great roofers. Work was done to a very high standard but also done in a very timely manner. We've had many people see his work and ask who the company was.

Rachel K
Re-roof, York

Got 3 quotes in total — EJL were by far the most competitive and had been recommended by someone I trusted. Communication was excellent throughout and the finish on the roof is faultless.

Strensall roofing questions

How quickly can you get to me in Strensall?
Strensall is around six miles north-east of our Acomb base, roughly twenty minutes out, so it is a regular run for us rather than a special trip. Every call gets a callback within two hours, Monday to Saturday daytime, and an active leak can usually be looked at within a day or two.
What kind of roofs do most Strensall houses have?
A real mix. The older village core around the green and St Mary's is traditional, with some Yorkshire stock and pitched tile, while most of the rest is twentieth-century estate housing in concrete interlocking tile, including the streets that grew up around the old camp. Out by Strensall Common the houses sit more exposed to the weather, which tends to find the weak ridge and flashing first.
Do you cover Towthorpe and the streets out by the common?
Yes. Strensall and Towthorpe are one of our regular northern runs, including the more exposed properties out towards Strensall Common. Repairs, ridge re-bedding, dry-fix upgrades, flashings, chimneys and roofline work, all with a free survey and a fixed written quote whatever the postcode.
The houses out here feel exposed. Does that change the roof?
It can. Properties out by the common catch more wind and driving rain than a sheltered city street, so it is usually the ridge, the verges and the flashings that loosen first. Where it makes sense we suggest mechanically fixed dry-ridge and dry-verge systems that hold up far better than old bedded mortar in the wind. We talk through what your roof actually needs at the survey.
Which council handles planning in Strensall?
City of York Council covers Strensall and Towthorpe. Most roof work out here is repair or like-for-like replacement that needs no consent, but where older or protected property is involved we deal with the York conservation team and talk it through with you first.
Are you actually local, or a national firm with a York number?
Local. EJL is family-run and based in Acomb, a regular run from Strensall, and has been roofing across York since 2010. Elliott surveys the roof himself and the same team does the work. There is no call centre and no out-of-county crew.
